What this book is

Most grandfathers do not write their stories down. Not because they do not have them, because no one has asked, or because the asking has been wrong. A box of blank pages is too much. A list of questions feels like a test. The stories stay with him until they do not.

Grandpa's Life in Letters is a guided book of invitations. One hundred and thirty-five prompts, carefully sequenced from the easiest to the hardest, that ask a grandfather to tell his grandchildren the things he has not yet said. The morning he met their grandmother. The year of his marriage that almost did not survive. The work his hands learned to do. The faith he has tested. The day he first held their parent. The letter he would write to each of them by name.

The book is made for him, not for the person giving it to him. It treats him as an author, not a subject. It leaves him room to write short or long, to skip what he wants to skip, to come back in a year. What he fills in becomes an heirloom his family will hold for the rest of their lives.

A prompt from the book

"Tell us about the kitchen you grew up in. Not the house, the kitchen specifically. Where the light came from in the morning. What was always on the counter. Who was usually standing at the stove, and what they were usually doing with their hands."

About Nathan Brennan

Nathan Brennan edits the Grandfather Letters series, a catalog of guided keepsake books that invite the older members of a family to tell their stories before it is too late to ask.

He is not a therapist, a memoirist, or a coach. He is someone who has watched too many families lose a grandparent's voice and decided to do something about it.
